What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is a management system standard relating to environmental management. ISO 14001 provides a standard for businesses to improve their environmental performance – and can be used to create a standardised approach to managing a business with an environmentally-friendly and sustainable focus.

What are the benefits of ISO 14001?

The standard helps an organization achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system, which provide value for the environment, the organization itself and interested parties. Consistent with the organization’s environmental policy, the intended outcomes of an environmental management system include:

  • enhancement of environmental performance;·
  • fulfilment of compliance obligations;
  • achievement of environmental objectives.

ISO 14001 is applicable to any organization, regardless of size, type and nature. ISO 14001 helps a business to consider the environmental impact of its activities, products and services, influencing the way things are done in a business.

The standard can be used in whole or in part to systematically improve environmental management. Claims of conformity to ISO 14001, however, are not acceptable unless all its requirements are incorporated into an organization’s environmental management system and fulfilled without exclusion.

ISO 14001 has been updated to ISO 14001:2015

This version follows a new, higher level structure to make it easier to use in conjunction with other management system standards, with increased importance given to risk.

It’s never been easier to adhere to multiple standards using the new versions. Your business will reduce costs, improve productivity and reduce waste when using standards in conjunction with each other.

There are a few changes in the new standard, one of which is the language changes. ISO 14001 now avoids the term “procedure” due to confusion on what whether it is a documented procedure or not.
